Through backpacking, I was introduced to the mountains at a young age. Wilderness, open space, pristine beauty, solace and personal challenge engaged me and since then, I have actively pursued mountain climbing, backpacking, snowboarding, and photography. Washington State is my home. I've developed my artist voice through nineteen years of mountaineering endeavors. Photography conveys my enthusiasm, intrigue, affinity, and sensitivity for the subject. Texture, form, intense color, action, and landscape bring the viewer into the drama and fabric of my photography; an alpine glow illuminating ghostly windblown snow, yawning crevasses on an expansive glacier, a human figure on the land, and the toiling spirit of the mountain climber. Capturing many of these scenes required patience, tenacity and intimate knowledge of the land and seasons. There were bone chilling days in sub-zero temperatures and gale force winds, where I prevented my camera from freezing by keeping it next to my body. I've continued to photograph after arduous summit climbs, ravenous mosquitoes attacks, and blissful days on the snowboard. The innate emotion, beauty and story of the places I have discovered are revealed in the artwork. For seven months of the year, I lead the National Park Service climbing rangers at Mount Rainier. In summer, I work out of two high camps on the mountain, patrolling the climbing routes, working to protect fragile alpine resources, and performing mountain rescue duties. I have summited Mount Rainier over 150 times, hiked virtually every trail in the park, snowboarded off the summit and melted endless gallons of pure Mount Rainier glacier snow for drinking water. |
